Is theocracy a good idea or a bad idea?

Theocracy is political rule by religious people based on religious ideas. The best current example is Iran, although the United States has tendencies in this direction.

What happens in a theocracy? You lose personal control because religious people have the power to suppress you. But this is exactly what many of the "religious right" want - a Christian country with them in charge, legislating morality and punishing sinners.
